It’s very unfashionable to have any sort of mistake or imperfection in the music, even down to string noise and pick sounds, and it’s been that way since 2012-2015. DxC was born into the age of digital production, and though a lot of MySpace bands had more raw sounding production, it’s become very slick and mechanical. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard any DxC (deathcore) band cite a hardcore band as an influence. everyone says the “core” part comes from hardcore but it super doesn’t. A lot of MySpace bands will cite Slipknot and Korn as huge influences, alongside bands like Carcass, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse etc. Even though “Nu-core” is big now, it was always there. Deathcore also has a significant yet seldom acknowledged Numetal influence. I think it would be very hard to find any skank beats from 2010ish to 2020. Deathcore hardly ever uses skank beats, though some blackened deathcore bands are starting to incorporate them. There are little miscellaneous differences too. You can name legendary death metal bassists, but there are no well known deathcore bassists. In death Metal the bass is often clearly audible and sometimes it even plays something a little different from what the guitars are doing. They tune so low the guitars can compensate (so they say) and it saves on travel costs. Some deathcore bands don’t even have bassists anymore. Another big difference has to do with bass! I call it Deathcore Bass Syndrome, where 90% of the time in deathcore if you can hear the bass at all, you really have to listen for it. In modern death metal drop tunings have become a lot more common, but aren’t the default. It’s hard to find a deathcore band that plays in a standard tuning, and most tune to at least drop A or lower, though there’s a chunk that don’t go that low. Deathcore bands tend to tune down lower, and they also use drop tunings far more. I think some of the clearest differentiators aren’t even directly stylistic.
